JAVA

Java is a programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. It has advanced from a language called OAK invented for real time systems in handhelds and set top boxes. 1995 it was converted to java to face the needs of the internet.

Java is object oriented like C++ is, but some common programming errors were eliminated.

Java is platform independent. In a primary step the source code is compiled to a platform independent bytecode. This bytecode then can be interpreted by so called Virtual Machines, which convert it to the machine specific commands like a script language. For faster transaction needs there are JIT Compilers available, compiling bytecode to machine code.

Today Java is a general purpose programming language with a large number of features for many programming areas. It was popular for writing small application which were embedded into web pages (so called applets), but today this is not that common anymore because of security and compatibility concerns.
